Would You Take Your Neighbor’s Home for a New Football Stadium?

Much of the October 24, 2022 School Board Meeting discussed how how important the levy was and how members of the administration wanted the newest, greatest, and consequently most expensive football stadium in Summit County. If we had unlimited funds a new, very fancy football stadium would be great.

People are struggling financially and the school is insisting on raising taxes to build a new football stadium. It made me think of the great libertarian columnist P. J. O’Rourke who was born in Toledo, Ohio and died earlier this year.

O’Rourke asked, “Would you kill your mother to pave I-95?” his point was that all government spending comes with a cost. He took it to the extreme that his mother would refuse to pay taxes and be shot by the police. Since the police act on our behalf so we would be shooting our own mother for out of control government tax and spend policies.

People are struggling under the weight of 40 year high inflation. Some people will be unable to keep up with the cost of ever increasing food and energy costs in addition to new tax levies. This includes people who own homes and people who rent, because their rent will go up to cover the new costs to the property owner.

I think it is very cold to raise taxes on people struggling from inflation so school administrators can feel like big shots walking into the newest, grandest football stadium in the county. I don't think it is worth risking people losing their homes so the School Board and school administrators can brag to their friends.
